A film about the artist Arnaldo Pomodoro
The Italian artist Arnaldo Pomodoro is one of the most important sculptors of modern times. He is best known for his golden bronze spheres. This is precisely why his early work, which uses dark colors, is surprising in this documentary. The wall relief is called: "L'inizio del tempo", in english: "The beginning of time". The title of the work of art couldn't be more appropriate, because at the beginning of the film, Arnaldo Pomodoro says, looking at the work of art, “That was the beginning of my time”. With Arnaldo Pomodoro, viewers immerse themselves in memories, his early years and the big question about the cosmos.
The artwork “L'inizio del tempo” – “The beginning of time”
The protagonist of this film is a work of art. A wall relief, larger than a person. It hangs in a German high school. And that's where the dilemma begins: art in public spaces is about inspiration, education and beauty. In this film it becomes clear right from the start that this work of art has already been through a lot. It hangs in the school stairwell behind a foosball table. Without any information. Without attention. Forgotten and, above all, destroyed beyond recognition by deep incisions.
The restoration process
The film follows the restoration process step by step and celebrates the craftsmanship and the rebirth of the relief with extended, calm scenes. Unlike the restorations with tweezers and magnifying glasses that are familiar from old paintings, here the rough craftsmanship is clear. The work of art is worked on with a grindstone, a grinder and soldering iron. It becomes clear that it takes pure physical effort to free the metal from the deep notches. The film delves deeply into the process of creating art and the sounds of the grindstone echo for a long time to come.
